The NHS 10 year plan has set the scene for how future health and social care will be designed and delivered at a neighbourhood level. This recognises the power and assets which are in our communities to provide good local services. These Neighbourhood Health Services will be designed and owned by communities. This approach challenges the centralised approach to community provision, as it is recognises that being more local, the services will reflect the needs of those who use them. The are many ways in which to achieve the aim of more localised and community focused provision. The mental health centre pilot in Heeley is one.

Mental health organisations, including Primary Care Sheffield, Mental health charities, and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Trust are in the process of opening the new Gleadless and Heeley Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre. This will be located at Newfield Green and there will be two buildings:

  1. Library and Terry Wright Community Centre: The library and the Terry Wright Community Centre will continue to be part of the local community, accessible to all. The building will be refurbished to include space for mental health services. It will still be used by the community for other activities.
  2. Newfield Green Clinic: This building will be expanded to provide more rooms for mental health services. Rooms that are not currently in use will be utilised.

This development is part of a pilot programme funded by NHS England. The pilot is a special project to try new ways of providing mental health services in the community. It aims to make it easier for people to get help close to home. It will use ideas from other countries to create a better system for mental health care. The Gleadless and Heeley Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre is one of six pilots across England.

The centre will open in three phases. We are aiming for phase three to be completed by Winter 2025.

  • Phase 1 (now open): Newfield Green Clinic site opens. Service users will be seen from Monday to Friday at this time
  • Phase 2: Library/Community Centre site opens. Because we will have space at two sites we will be able to run services 24/7
  • Phase 3: Hospitality beds open

One of the aims of the pilot is that it will make care simpler for people in Gleadless and Heeley. Teams that already offer mental health services in Sheffield will work together to deliver care and treatments at the new centre.

The teams that will work out of the new centre include:

  • Urgent and crisis team
  • Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team
  • Early Intervention Team
  • Older Adults Community Mental Health Team
  • Community Enhancing Recovery Team
  • Community Mental Health Team (South Care Group Four)
  • Primary and Community Mental Health team (Heeley Plus team)
